Do-over’s, Hangovers, Practice, Photos & Moon Gel

Ok, so on the first day of tracking on August 9th we were a little too ambitious in trying to track 8 songs in one day. And the very last track that day showed the signs of our fatigue. So we set today to re-track a ballad (Not Alone) that Kev and I co-wrote for Operation Moms Cookies and our Troops overseas. Now let me start by saying that I love Kenny, but just because you love something or someone doesn’t mean that sometimes you don’t want to kill em’. Kenny shows up to record after a night of drinking whiskey at a wedding and he forgets his moon gels, which are these boogar like substance 1-2 inch pads that you place on the drums to help take a little of the un-wanted ring out of them. Kev with his previous Guitar Center out of gas experience does not offer to go this time. So off goes Kenny to Guitar Center and leaves Johnny, Kev and I to wait. Kenny texted me the night before and said that he absolutely had to leave by 2:30 but previously told me that Friday that he had all day Sunday. So I planned on re-recording the drum track, practicing for upcoming shows and taking some promo photos after rehearsal.

Kenny gets back, with a hangover in full swing. His drumsticks must have felt like hammers because when we started to track every time he hit the drums they sounded like a pair of work boots in the dryer. Alright I have been known to exaggerate some but it was close. Kenny likes to dance a bit when he plays and there was no dancing, he also likes to crunch up his face and dig into the drums but the only crunching was him chewing on the small chunks of puke that were aspirating up from his stomach into his mouth. Alright I am exaggerating again. After multiple takes of going no-where a miracle happened. The room got brighter with natural sun light beaming into the basement windows, Kenny started to dance, his sticks became as light as tooth picks and the Kenny we all know and love nailed a perfect take. Then he had to leave…no practice….no photos…..but we got the take and he has some moon gel. We love you Kenny!
